Sony has ample experience with creating TV shows and movies, the company has an entire arm dedicated to this particular business. However, what’s unheard of is it jumping into original programming for PlayStation. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House tells Wall Street Journal that the company is going to create original TV shows for PlayStation so that there is a “broad range of broadcast content to replicate the live TV experience.” The first original show will be a one-hour drama series called “Powers.”
Its an obvious move by the company to make the PlayStation more at home in the living room. The consoles have done just fine over the past few decades serving as powerful gaming consoles, so its certainly an ambitious effort on Sony’s part to turn them into more than a device that can only play video games. Powers, its first original show, is going to be produced by Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind hit drama series Breaking Bad.
Sony’s first original TV show for PlayStation will be available exclusively in the U.S. It will be available for streaming through the PlayStation Network, which is available on over 30 million internet connected PlayStation devices.
The scribe also claims that this venture is going to be different from Sony’s rumored online pay-TV service. The service will offer traditional channels through satellitle, cable or phone companies. Sony is believed to be in discussions with media companies to acquire rights.
